Mahanadi Gas News | India may have uncovered another important piece of its energy puzzle. ONGC has struck natural gas in the deep waters of the Mahanadi Offshore Basin, around 43 kilometres off the coast of Odisha near Konark. The India Gas Discovery was made in the MDW-28 well, where gas was encountered between 1,441 and 1,452 metres below the surface, after the well was drilled to 1,623 metres. For India Energy Security, the discovery is significant because domestic production currently falls well short of demand. India produces around 90–97 million metric cubic metres of natural gas daily, while consumption is close to 200 million. This makes Natural Gas Discovery India efforts strategically important for the Indian Economy. Hardeep Singh Puri described the development as a major milestone for India’s offshore energy exploration under the Samudra Manthan initiative. ONGC says MDW-28 is flowing gas at encouraging rates with sustained reservoir pressure, although further testing will determine recoverable volumes and commercial viability. The development comes amid a wider expansion in Offshore Drilling India and Oil And Gas India exploration. The government’s ₹84,084-crore Samudra Manthan programme aims to accelerate deepwater and ultra-deepwater exploration, potentially increasing domestic production and reducing import dependence. Recent developments also include the India Oil Discovery at Ashoknagar in West Bengal and exploration activity in the Andaman region. The Andaman Oil Discovery and reported Andaman Oil Reserves are part of a broader search for domestic Oil, Crude Oil, and Natural Gas resources.
