This photograph was taken in Saluda, North Carolina, during in 2018 of our fall mountain trips. We went for a wedding and found the sweetest little place called Green River Lodge. It was a tiny, quaint little motel perched right along the ridge of a mountain, simple and unassuming from the front — but behind the room was this extraordinary overlook that completely took my breath away. You walked in from the parking lot one way… and out the back door into this. Layers of blue mountains. A sky on fire. A view that made you feel very small in the very best kind of way. I only had my two big kids then, and they were still so little — around one and three. My parents were with us too, and we were in town celebrating my friend Alex getting married. It was such a happy trip, full of that kind of excitement that comes with weddings, family, and getting away somewhere beautiful together. What I remember most about that evening is the quiet. Not emptiness. Just peace. That soft, ambient hush the mountains seem to hold when the day is ending and the sky is doing something spectacular overhead. I remember being so grateful. Grateful for my babies. Grateful for the beauty. Grateful for the surprise of opening the back door of a small mountain motel and finding a view that felt almost too magnificent to belong to such an ordinary tiny place. Later, my little ones wore matching pajamas, and I have the sweetest cozy picture of them all snuggled up together that night. That’s motherhood, isn’t it? The grand and the tiny held together in the same memory. A sky full of glory. A little motel room. A wedding weekend. Two sleepy babies in matching pajamas. When I think of Lowcountry sunsets, they make me feel cozy and at home, but mountain sunsets feel different. They make me feel small. Not in a lonely way — in a holy way. They remind me of the power of God, the might of His creation. The force and beauty He speaks into existence with ease. The marsh whispers and praise. The mountains declare and decree, both tell the truth about Him. I think that is why I have loved this photograph for so many years. It holds the beauty of getting away. The joy of a sweet family season. The excitement of celebrating someone we loved. And the overwhelming reminder that God is endlessly faithful — not only to sustain us, but to place us inside a world so full of beauty, wonder, and awe. This was one little moment in one little motel on one mountain trip.
