Why did Slovenia leave Yugoslavia after ten days of fighting, while Croatia descended into a devastating war? In 1991, two declarations of independence exposed the forces tearing Yugoslavia apart and sent its republics down different paths. This Kings and Generals documentary follows the opening campaigns of the Yugoslav Wars, from the first clashes in Croatia to the January 1992 ceasefire. We examine the confrontations at Pakrac, Plitvice Lakes, and Borovo Selo, before following Slovenia’s resistance against the Yugoslav People’s Army during the Ten-Day War. In Croatia, the conflict escalates as Serb paramilitaries and JNA forces seize territory, Croatian troops surround military barracks, and captured weapons transform the balance of power. The siege of Vukovar, the struggle around Osijek, and the bombardment of Dubrovnik reveal the military and civilian consequences of Yugoslavia’s collapse. How did Slobodan Milošević’s objectives shape the fighting? Why did Franjo Tuđman initially avoid confronting the JNA? And why did the army withdraw from Slovenia but fight on in Croatia? Discover how political calculations, military resistance, and international diplomacy shaped the first phase of Croatia’s war, left the country divided, and set the stage for the catastrophe in Bosnia and Herzegovina as Yugoslavia’s disintegration entered another bloody chapter.
