After USS Jeannette was crushed by Arctic ice, thirty-three men escaped with three small open boats and began a desperate journey toward Siberia. On September 12, 1881, a violent gale separated the crews—and each boat entered a different history. George W. Melville’s whaleboat reached the Lena Delta with all eleven men alive. George W. De Long’s cutter also reached land, but inaccurate maps, failing supplies, freezing channels, and isolation trapped his party inside the delta. His journal recorded their gradual decline until the final entry stopped. Charles W. Chipp’s eight-man cutter was last seen struggling in the storm and vanished without a confirmed survivor, wreck, campsite, body, or final message.
