When Jesus was crucified, eleven of his twelve male disciples ran.
Five women stayed.
This is their story — the story of Mary the mother of Jesus, Mary Magdalene, Mary of Clopas, Salome, and Joanna — the women who stood at the foot of the cross when everyone else fled. It is also the story of a 33-year-old prophecy that finally landed, a Roman execution that was itself an act of public defiance to witness, and the reason the first person on earth to see the risen Christ was not an apostle, but a woman most sermons still get wrong.
Drawing on Scripture, the Jewish historian Josephus, the church historians Eusebius and Hippolytus of Rome, and the second-century writings of Hegesippus, this video traces every woman named at the cross — who they were, what they risked, and why their names were written down when a woman's testimony was not even legally admissible in the ancient world.
If you have ever loved someone you could not save, this video is for you.
