Oasis Location: Sydney, Australia Venue: Entertainment Centre Date: 3rd March 1998 Source: Audience Recording Continuing on with their controversial tour of Australia, the lads play the first of two nights in Sydney, and after a string of middling performances, this show is a bit of a wildcard one. Liam’s voice hasn’t completely recovered, but it sounds far better on this gig than any other show from late February, and all of March 1998. The rest of the band seem more into this performance too, with Noel in particular putting in ones of his best gigs of the year, with some really cool playing Stand By Me and Supersonic of course. He has great fun in his acoustic set as well. He teases D’Yer Wanna Be A Spaceman after Don’t Go Away, then goes straight into Some Might Say. Despite this being the only version with Noel on acoustic recorded, it was apparently at several of the following gigs in both the Oceanic and South American legs. It’s a lovely version, calling back to four years earlier when he was playing it in an empty Club Quattro in Japan, when his songs were about to take over the world. And now four years later he’s singing the song at a time when Oasis at it was, was on a bit of a comedown. Quite poetic in a way. Acquiesce is still absent for the moment in the place of I Am The Walrus, but it would return soon enough. Despite it’s absence and the fact the set is still 16 songs this show is way over the 100 minute mark, and is actually the longest gig of the year as there is so much crammed into this performance. For example, when the band return to play Walrus they do a small jam. Liam is apparently on guitar with Noel on drums and Bonehead sat at the keyboards, according to bootlegs of this gig. All in all if you’re looking for a good late Be Here Now show this is probably the best example you’re going to get, as there’s some nice banter and moments throughout.
