Wim van Beek (1930) studied at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. He gained his degrees for organ and piano with distinction. He was professor for organ at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and at the Conservatory in Groningen. He has been organist of St. Martin's church since 1956. Wim van Beek has performed in most European countries. Besides, he has performed as a solo organist with symphony and chamber orchestras.
Brief chronology of the Martini organ
ca. 1450 Building of a great organ
ca. 1482 Rebuilding of the existing Gothic organ, presumably by Johan ten Damme (with Rudolf Agricola as his adviser)
1542 Alteration in Renaissance style of particularly the Hoofdwerk
1564 Enlargement by Andreas de Mare
1627-28 Enlargement by Anthoni en Adam Verbeeck
1685-90 Alteration by Jan Helman
1691-92 Alteration and enlargement (32'-pedal towers) by Arp Schnitger
1729-30 Alteration and enlargement (new Rugwerk) by Frans Caspar Schnitger and Albertus Anthonie Hinsz
1740 Enlargement with seven new stops by Hinsz
1808-1912 Many modifications by Lohman, Van Oeckelen and Doornbos. Alteration (for instance electrical action and re-into- nation) by J. de Koff
1971 Disassembling because of restoration
1976-84 Restoration, partial reconstruction by Jürgen Ahrend from Leer/Loga (based on the 1740 situation). C.H. Edskes was adviser.
Ever since the restoration has been completed, the organ of St. Martin's church in Groningen enjoys the reputation of being one of the most representative organs built in the North-German baroque style.
