Bus Driver Let A Soaked Old Woman Ride Free—A Week Later Her Son Bought The Bus Company

A bus driver pays a soaked old woman’s $1.25 fare and drives her home in the rain in this full-length kindness story. A week later her son buys the bus company—and the boss who said “let her walk” freezes. Calvin Brooks has driven Route 12 for nineteen years. On a stormy Tuesday night, a seventy-nine-year-old woman comes up forty cents short at the fare box. The radio crackles: every rider pays, let her walk. Calvin puts his own dollar in the box, turns the radio off, and drives four blocks off route to her porch. By morning he is suspended without pay, his route is handed to the driver who filmed him, and her umbrella is in the trash. She never told him that her son owns a freight company. On Friday at five a.m., a black car pulls into the depot yard. Question of the Day: Calvin said he paid the fare because “she’d have walked, and I’d have driven past her every night for the rest of my life.” Have you ever bent a rule at work for a stranger—and what did it cost you?
