Australia built one of the longest fences on Earth — a barrier stretching nearly 5,600 kilometers across the Outback to keep wild dingoes away from sheep-grazing regions. But the Dingo Fence is far more than a line of steel mesh. For more than a century, Australia has continuously inspected, repaired, rebuilt, and paid millions of dollars to keep it functioning. In this documentary, we trace how Australia's early battle with invasive rabbits helped create the idea of continent-scale animal barriers, how individual fences eventually became the Dingo Fence, and how maintenance crews keep thousands of kilometers of fencing alive against heat, wind, erosion, and floods. We also examine the economics behind the fence: the sheep, grazing land, and multi-billion-dollar agricultural industry it helps protect. And then comes the bigger paradox. If Australia has enormous stretches of seemingly empty land surrounding the Dingo Fence, why is the country still struggling with a housing shortage? The answer reveals the difference between simply having land...and having land where people can actually live. 📌TIMESTAMPS : 00:00 - Intro 01:55 - How Australia’s Animal Fence System Began 03:12 - From Rabbit Fence to Dingo Fence 04:55 - How the Dingo Fence Is Maintained and Rebuilt 07:42 - Why Australia Keeps Paying for the Fence 10:08 - Why Not Build Homes on Australia’s Empty Land? 10:53 - Why the Outback Is So Difficult to Urbanize 12:00 - Australia’s Strategy for Building More Homes 12:51 - Making Housing More Affordable 13:43 - Planning Reform and Final Conclusion Thank you for watching!
