Until you look closely at their hands. One hand appears to be positioned strangely. Another seems to be gripping something that shouldn't be there. And the sister's fingers appear to tell a completely different story. What exactly are we looking at? A hidden object? A medical condition? A photographic illusion? Or simply the strange way children had to pose for cameras more than a century ago? There is an important historical detail that changes how we should interpret photographs like this. Early photographic processes often required subjects to remain still for extended exposures.
