Did Ponce de León really search for the Fountain of Youth? Not one document from his lifetime mentions it. Here's how a royal contract, a hostile chronicler, a shipwrecked boy raised among the Calusa, and a Klondike millionaire nicknamed "Diamond Lil" turned a conquistador's career into Florida's most famous myth.

ACCURACY NOTE
• Ponce's 1512 and 1514 contracts and surviving letters never mention a fountain. Oviedo (1535), a partisan of his rival Diego Columbus, was the first to tie him to one; Fontaneda (c.1575) and Herrera (1601) repeated it.
• The 1513 landing site is unknown. St. Augustine, Ponce Inlet and Melbourne Beach (Douglas Peck's reconstruction) are all disputed candidates.
• The 1521 colony site near Charlotte Harbor is approximate, and Ponce's age at death is uncertain.
• Sources disagree on when Luella Day McConnell acquired the St. Augustine property (c.1900–1904). Her claim of a coquina cross laid by Ponce has never been substantiated.
• Maps are schematic. Scenes labelled "Reenactment" are AI-assisted illustrations of generic figures, not real likenesses. No authentic portraits of Ponce, McConnell, Oviedo, Fontaneda, Herrera or Martyr exist, so name cards are used.
