Noojee is a popular country town in Victoria’s Gippsland region, located about two hours east of Melbourne. Surrounded by mountain forests, rivers, waterfalls, and scenic countryside, Noojee is well known for its rich timber industry history, outdoor activities, and beautiful natural attractions. Today, it is a favourite destination for day trips, camping, bushwalking, fishing, photography, and four-wheel driving adventures. One Saturday we decided to go for a day trip and explore. The history of Noojee dates back to the late 1800s when gold discoveries and the region’s vast forests attracted settlers. The area quickly became an important timber town, with large sawmills harvesting the giant Mountain Ash trees that covered the surrounding hills. The arrival of the railway in 1919 helped transport timber to Melbourne and other parts of Victoria, allowing the town to grow and prosper. Although bushfires and the eventual closure of the railway changed the area, Noojee still proudly preserves its timber heritage through historical displays and local landmarks. One of the most famous attractions in the region is the Noojee Trestle Bridge. Built in 1919 for the Noojee railway line, it is the tallest surviving wooden trestle bridge in Victoria. The bridge stands approximately 21 metres high and stretches more than 100 metres across a forested valley. After being destroyed during the devastating Black Friday bushfires of 1939, the bridge was rebuilt and remains a significant piece of Victoria’s railway history. Visitors can walk across the bridge and enjoy stunning views of the surrounding forest, making it one of the most photographed landmarks in Gippsland. Another major attraction near Noojee is Toorongo Falls and Amphitheatre Falls. Located just a short drive from town, these beautiful waterfalls are set within a lush rainforest environment filled with towering trees, ferns, and native wildlife. Toorongo Falls drops around 25 metres down a rocky cliff face, while nearby Amphitheatre Falls flows through a narrow rock formation creating a spectacular natural display. The walking tracks are well maintained and suitable for most visitors, making the waterfalls a popular destination throughout the year, especially after periods of rain. Noojee is also one of Victoria’s best destinations for four-wheel driving. The surrounding state forests contain hundreds of kilometres of forest roads, former logging tracks, steep hill climbs, and challenging off-road routes. Many tracks connect with nearby areas such as Mount Baw Baw, Walhalla, Erica, and Thomson Dam. Drivers can find everything from easy scenic forest drives to more difficult muddy tracks that require experienced four-wheel-drive skills. The area’s combination of mountain scenery, river crossings, dense forests, and remote bushland makes it a favourite location for off-road enthusiasts. Today, Noojee offers a perfect mix of history, nature, and adventure. Whether visitors are exploring the historic trestle bridge, enjoying the peaceful waterfalls, discovering the region’s timber heritage, or tackling the many four-wheel-drive tracks, Noojee provides one of the most enjoyable outdoor experiences in Victoria.
