The area where Isernia stands has been populated by man since the Paleolithic era the first settlements, in fact, date back to at least 700,000 years ago. The origins of the urban agglomeration are also very ancient, but at present it is not possible to establish a certain dating. The city was under Samnite rule since the 5th century BC.
