This week on WION Wings, we enter the workshops where Durga Puja begins months before the celebrations, look ahead to a record-scale Deepotsav in Ayodhya, and travel from Jordan’s Wadi Rum to Catalonia and Paris for extraordinary experiences around the world. Before the pandals open and millions arrive to celebrate, Durga Puja begins in the hands of artisans. We visit Delhi and Kolkata as preparations gather pace, focusing on the traditional process of creating the idols that become the centrepiece of the festival. From shaping the figures to adding intricate details, we meet the craftspeople whose skills have been passed down through generations and discover the extraordinary amount of work behind each finished creation. Ayodhya is preparing to glow once again for the 10th edition of Deepotsav. Organisers plan to illuminate the city with around 3 million earthen lamps, requiring approximately 96,000 litres of oil and 6.4 million wicks. The enormous spectacle transforms the ghats and riverfront into a sea of light as the city celebrates its association with Lord Ram. Jordan’s spectacular Wadi Rum becomes the backdrop for an entirely different type of travel experience. Skydivers leap from a hot-air balloon and freefall above the desert’s sandstone mountains, vast valleys and otherworldly landscape. In Catalonia, teams work together to build enormous multi-tiered castells, or human towers. Strength, balance and extraordinary coordination are essential as participants climb onto one another’s shoulders, creating structures that can rise several storeys above the crowd before carefully coming back down. And finally, Paris gets considerably shorter on four legs. Dachshunds descend on the Champs-Élysées, filling the famous avenue with sausage dogs and their owners for one of the week’s most unusual gatherings.
