This 4K walking tour takes us through Kuzguncuk’s quiet streets, traditional houses, neighborhood cafés, small shops and everyday local life. Kuzguncuk has a history stretching back to the Byzantine period. During the Ottoman era, it developed into a particularly diverse Bosphorus neighborhood. A Jewish community was established here by the 17th century, while Greek, Armenian and later Muslim residents also became part of the neighborhood. This mixture of communities left Kuzguncuk with a rich architectural and cultural heritage that is still visible in the area today. The origin of the name Kuzguncuk itself is not completely certain. Historical sources give several explanations, including an older name connected with the Byzantine-era Hrisokeramos, meaning “golden tile,” another theory connecting it with Kosinitza, and a tradition linking the name to a figure called Kuzgun Baba. Over time, Kuzguncuk became known for its old wooden houses, narrow streets and strong neighborhood character. Üsküdar Municipality also describes the area as a place shaped by Jewish, Armenian, Greek and Muslim communities and notes that many of its traditional houses have been restored. Today, walking through Kuzguncuk still feels different from Istanbul’s busiest districts. The colorful architecture, mature trees, small businesses and slower rhythm give it the atmosphere of a small historic village inside a huge city.
