REMEMBER YOUR MAMA'S HEART

Remember Your Mama’s Heart was written for a dear friend whose grief came in layers. Three years before her son’s unexpected passing, he had chosen to exit her life. There had been no opportunity for the healing, reconciliation, or conversation a mother’s heart might continue to hope for. When he died unexpectedly, she was left grieving not only the loss of her son, but also the years of separation that could no longer be changed. On the anniversary of his passing—what she tenderly calls his “Angelversary”—those wounds opened again. She wrote from the depths of her heart in a private journal entry and sent her words to me. As I read them, I knew I wanted to honor what she had expressed. Using the feelings, questions, memories, and thoughts she shared in her own journal, I created this song as a tribute to her—and to the complicated grief of a mother who loved her child through both absence and death. There are some goodbyes we never knew would be final. There are conversations we thought there would still be time to have. And there are mothers who continue loving their children long after circumstances have separated them. “Remember Your Mama’s Heart” is for them. It is my prayer that this song will gently remind every estranged child, and every grieving mother: Whatever happened between you, whatever remained unsaid, and however many years may pass—there was once a mother’s heart that held you close, dreamed for you, prayed for you, and loved you. And perhaps somewhere beyond everything we understand, love still remembers.
