Born into a musical family, his father being Thiruvaiyaru Muthuswamy Iyer, a respected musician.TMT was immersed in classical music from a young age. He received rigorous training under Vidwan Chittoor Subramania Pillai, a prominent disciple of Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, and adopted the Ariyakudi bani, known for its disciplined concert structure and clarity. TMT was admired for his powerful voice, precise diction, and mastery of raga alapana, neraval, and kalpana swaras, all delivered with intense bhava (emotion) and technical excellence. A much sought-after performer, he regularly graced the stages of major Carnatic festivals and Sabhas, particularly in the Chennai Music Season. Equally respected as a teacher, he mentored numerous students who carried forward his musical tradition. He was honored with several prestigious awards, including the Sangeetha Kalanidhi by the Madras Music Academy in 1981 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. T.M. Thyagarajan's legacy remains strong in the Carnatic world, remembered for his classical depth, humility, and unwavering commitment to tradition.
