This is a sermon by Pastor Stephen Tong that is full of tension and penetrating power. He begins by posing a contradiction: he has never been permitted to preach in mainland China, yet that is the place with the largest number of people in the world listening to his preaching. He attributes this to people who, after being deceived for a long time, long to hear the truth; and the core of that truth is that Christ Himself is the truth.
He emphasizes that apart from Jesus, no one truly manifests the image of God, is after God’s own heart, or serves God in holiness and righteousness without blemish. To imitate Christ is success as a human being; those unwilling to learn from Christ make no progress. All the fullness and wisdom of God dwell bodily in Christ, so that whoever has seen Him has seen the Father who sent Him.
The sermon then turns to the prospect of the Chinese church: there are currently about 127 million believers; in nineteen years the number may reach 250 million, surpassing the United States and becoming the country with the most Christians in the world. Even then, relative to a population of 1.4 or 1.5 billion, it would still be only one-sixth. Therefore we must on the one hand strive with all our might, and on the other remain humble and teachable, constantly feeling ourselves unworthy. The prodigal’s demand for his inheritance was the beginning of his fall; his confession of unworthiness was the beginning of restoration. The more a person understands grace, the humbler he becomes, the closer he draws to God, and the more he gives glory to God. Soli Deo Gloria and Sola Gratia must be joined together.
He calls Reformed theology the most essential and central condensation of the faith, yet it is not a slogan, an idea, or an ideological achievement, but a living faith of practice and obedience. Faith without works is dead; today there are many “dead” or “dying” Reformed Christians. He compares a dead lion and a mad dog: a dead lion, however fierce it once was, is not to be feared; a mad dog’s single bite can be fatal. If Christians in the world are not “mad” enough, the world will pay them no attention. Being too normal, like a fight being watched on television, poses no threat. What truly influences the world is a life that cannot be controlled and that risks everything for the truth.
