"Is being nice a disadvantage in this industry?" "Are you okay?" — those are two of the questions I ask on camera. East Nashville singer-songwriter Taylor Bickett sat down with me to talk through her debut album, Nothing I Can't Undo, and the conversation went places I didn't expect: why nearly every song on the record has blood in it, whether cruelty is ever really intentional or just cowardice wearing a mask, and the one genuinely happy song she's ever written (there's only one). We also go behind the curtain on how records actually get made — session culture, "demo-itis," co-writing with Jensen McCrae, and what it's really like navigating management, producers, and the business side as an independent artist — plus East Nashville's sound, physical media in a streaming world, AI and Auto-Tune, and what's ahead on her fall tour.
Taylor is an East Nashville singer-songwriter whose lyrics stopped me in my tracks more than once — there's a rawness to her writing that I wanted to sit down and talk through with her directly. Producer Adam Dobkin was the one who told me I needed to talk to her, and about five minutes in, I understood why.
