Isigny: A Town Destroyed on D-Day, Rebuilt from the Ashes

During the Battle of Normandy, some towns suffered more than others. Isigny was certainly one of those towns. Because it was a major objective following the D-Day invasion, more than 60% of the city was destroyed two days after the invasion. Isigny played significant role in the D-Day landings: Twenty small Dutch schyts were employed by the Americans to bring stores and equipment inland from the larger cargo ships that were moored off-shore. Driving through Isigny today, you can see that it's since been almost entirely rebuilt. The quality of milk in Isigny is said to be second-to-none, so cheese produced there is famous worldwide. And if you visit Isigny, their caramels are also pretty incredible! Isigny is a busy town--and often loud, with lots of construction underway, so we had to be a bit creative in producing this program as we found those parts of the town that are still standing in the aftermath of the Battle of Normandy.
