What happened after MacKenzie Lueck’s Lyft dropped her at Hatch Park?
The park had cameras—but they weren’t recording.
On June 17, 2019, 23-year-old University of Utah student MacKenzie Lueck returned to Salt Lake City and took a Lyft from the airport to Hatch Park. Her driver later told police that she met someone in another vehicle. That meeting was never captured: the cameras at the park were decoys, leaving investigators without footage of MacKenzie’s last known encounter.
In this Cluework true crime documentary, we follow the evidence that helped investigators rebuild the case: released airport images, the Lyft driver’s account, phone-location records, the search of a Salt Lake City home, and a digital lead that took search teams to Logan Canyon.
MacKenzie’s disappearance became a homicide investigation. On June 28, police announced the arrest of Ayoola Ajayi. Her remains were found in Logan Canyon in July. In October 2020, Ajayi pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and desecration of a human body; under the plea agreement, he would spend life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The evidence helped establish a timeline and bring the case to court—but it could not restore the life Mackenzie should have had. We tell her story with care, distinguish public records from visual reconstructions, and explain why the missing camera footage mattered.
The on-screen presenter is fictional. Maps and explanatory visuals are reconstructions based on public information. There is no recording of the meeting at Hatch Park.
