Marie Curie changed science forever—but the discovery that made her famous would eventually leave behind notebooks that are still radioactive more than a century later. In this Past Decoded documentary, we explore the extraordinary life of Marie Curie, the scientist who pioneered the study of radioactivity and helped discover two new elements: polonium and radium. Born in Warsaw in 1867, Marie Curie fought through enormous barriers to pursue an education before moving to Paris and studying at the Sorbonne. Together with Pierre Curie, she investigated the mysterious radiation coming from uranium and pitchblende, leading to discoveries that transformed modern physics, chemistry and medicine. But the story has a darker side. Marie Curie and Pierre Curie worked with radioactive materials before the dangers of ionizing radiation were fully understood. Their experiments led to the discovery of polonium and radium, while radium later became important to the development of radiation-based medical treatments. During World War I, Curie also helped bring X-ray technology closer to wounded soldiers through mobile radiography units. Marie Curie died in 1934 from aplastic anemia after years of exposure to radiation. Her laboratory notebooks, contaminated during her early radioactive experiments, remain radioactive and are preserved under special conditions by the Bibliothèque nationale de France. She became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and remains the only individual to receive Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields: Physics and Chemistry. This is the story of Marie Curie, radioactivity, radium, polonium, scientific discovery—and the human cost behind one of the most important breakthroughs in modern science. Welcome to PAST DECODED.
