October 1982. Late Night with David Letterman, Studio 6A, New York. Pat Benatar, the biggest-selling woman in rock and roll, came to talk about her tour and keep things light. Nobody told her there would be a second guest.
When Letterman announced a surprise and Bruce Springsteen walked out, he moved to sit beside her. She stood up, walked past him, and took the last chair at the far end of the row. "You go ahead and sit there, Mr. Springsteen. I'm fine right here."
The studio froze. Pat had a ten-year fight she had never talked about in public, and Bruce had just walked into the middle of it.
But Bruce didn't get angry. He didn't make a joke. He asked her one question nobody in her career had ever bothered to ask. What happened next ended with an old blues song from her mother's kitchen, a guitar that refused to take over, a matchbook with eight words on it, and a seat change David Letterman said he had never seen before.
❤️ Like if you believe everyone deserves to be asked "why."
