A catastrophic flash flood in Nepal has caused widespread destruction across the Himalayan region, damaging roads, bridges, homes, settlements and critical infrastructure. According to preliminary scientific assessments, a major glacier or ice-rock mass collapsed in the upper Himalayan region near the Nepal–Tibet border. The collapse sent a huge volume of ice, rocks, mud and debris into the river valley, triggering an extremely powerful flash flood. The disaster severely affected areas including Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading. Several roads and bridges were washed away, while homes, vehicles and infrastructure were buried under mud and debris. The floodwater moved through the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems. Further downstream, the river becomes part of the Narayani river system in Nepal. After entering India, the river is known as the Gandak, which flows through Bihar before eventually joining the Ganga. This geographical connection has raised concerns about downstream water levels and possible flood risks in parts of India. Another major discussion surrounding the disaster is the Nepal–Tibet border region. Questions are being raised about whether there was sufficient monitoring and early warning regarding glacier instability and river conditions upstream. However, there is currently no confirmed evidence proving that Chinese infrastructure projects or the deliberate release of water caused the disaster. Scientists are closely examining factors such as glacier instability, rising temperatures, ice-rock avalanches, changing Himalayan weather patterns and the possibility of temporary natural dams forming inside river valleys. In this video, we explain the entire disaster using a detailed map: Where did the Nepal flood begin? What happened near the Nepal–Tibet border? How can a glacier collapse trigger a flash flood? Where does the Bhote Koshi River flow? How is the Trishuli River connected to the Narayani? Why is the Narayani called the Gandak after entering India? Could Bihar face downstream effects? Why were roads and bridges destroyed so quickly? Why are questions being raised about China? Did development activities contribute to the disaster? What causes glacier and ice avalanches? Is there a risk of another flash flood? Rescue and search operations are continuing across the affected Himalayan region. Authorities are searching for missing residents, tourists and pilgrims while relief teams attempt to reach areas cut off by damaged roads and bridges. Several countries, including India, have announced humanitarian assistance for Nepal. Casualty and missing-person figures mentioned in this video are based on information available at the time of publication. These numbers may change as rescue and recovery operations continue. This video is created for news reporting, public awareness, education and geographical explanation.
