Sidechaining is one of the most inspiring tools in a producer's toolkit—and in this video, I break it down from the ground up and show you how far it can take you. We start with the classic example: using a kick to duck the volume of a bass for that pumping EDM sound. You'll learn exactly how to route the sidechain, dial in threshold, ratio, attack, release, and knee, and even set your release in tempo with the track using a simple BPM calculation. From there, we explore three more creative applications that open up new possibilities: Example 2 – Percussion-Triggered Pads: Using a peak controller (envelope follower) to make a pad "play" the rhythm of a house percussion loop—complete with LFO modulation on tension and decay for organic movement. Example 3 – Pitch Sidechaining: Routing a percussion loop's envelope to the pitch knob of a synth, creating wild melodic fluctuation from a single note (plus delay for extra vibe). Example 4 – Expander vs. Peak Controller: Making vocals pop louder on every snare hit using an expander (inverted ratio), or gating them completely with a peak controller for a rhythmic stutter effect. Along the way, I cover practical workflow tips—like why you should link to a utility plugin's volume knob instead of your track fader (so you keep mix control), and how to avoid the "resolve conflicts" trap when using one peak controller on multiple parameters. The through-line here is interaction: sidechaining lets different elements of your track communicate with each other. A kick and a bass. A snare and a vocal. A percussion loop and a pad. Once you understand the routing and the parameters, you can build your own custom sidechain effects from scratch and make your tracks feel alive and connected.
