Not responding to name call is a common problem among children with speech and language delays and communication problems. Name call response has to be developed by 1 year of age. If your child is not responding to name call there may be 3 reasons 1. A communication problem like autism. child does not like to involve in social interaction 2. A receptive delay where child does not know many things including his name 3. Child does not like the events that would happen after he responded to the name call. 4. Hearing loss So most of the parents think reason 3 would be the reason.But reason 3 happens in a very very few children. So that we might consider other reasons to ensure that child does not have anmy communication problems and all. I have described 3 activities with 3 types of reinforcements and 4 different type of situations where you have do the activities and see the response Situations 1.without any distraction 2. With mild distraction (in a room with tv and other people) 3. When child involved in play 4. Out side you have to start with situation 1 and go to the other level as child improves Activities 1. Call child's name in a melodic way 2. Call child's name along with clapping/ stamping foot/ waving 3. whisper child's name (loudness variation) Rewards/ Reinforcements 1. Natural rewards like, if they respond to the name taking them outside or to go for a bath 2. Physical Rewards like hugging/ kissing/ tickling 3. Tangible Rewards like giving them favorite toy or the items they love a lot (works with children with autism) As the child improves reduce reward's duration and amount and do all the activities short and frequently and consistently.
