Highland Recreation Loop C | Short, Rocky & Seriously Technical Michigan Singletrack!

In this episode of MTB TrailView, we're riding Loop C at Highland Recreation Area in Highland, Michigan—a short but seriously entertaining dose of old-school Michigan mountain biking.
At roughly 2.4 miles, C doesn't look intimidating on the map. But don't let the mileage fool you. The Michigan DNR labels this loop VERY TECHNICAL, and once you hit the singletrack, you'll understand why.
Loop C branches off the B Loop and wastes very little time showing you what's ahead. Near the beginning you'll encounter a rock filter that serves as a pretty good preview of what's coming: tight singletrack, rocks, roots, sharp dips, off-camber terrain and technical lines that reward good bike handling more than outright speed.
The trail is narrow, natural and constantly asking you to make decisions. You're picking lines through rock passages, timing pedal strokes, threading between trees and trying to maintain enough momentum to clean the next feature.
Compared with Highland's A and B Loops, C turns the technical dial another click with more rocks, roots and tighter switchbacks. Then, roughly two-thirds of the way around, you'll encounter an extended climb that becomes especially entertaining when you remember you've already ridden A and much of B just to get there.
Loop C may be short, but there isn't much wasted trail. It's concentrated old-school XC riding that tests line choice, balance, momentum, climbing and your ability to stay loose when the rocks start coming.
If you're an intermediate rider who's getting comfortable on technical terrain—or an experienced rider who loves raw, rocky, rooty Michigan singletrack—Loop C deserves a spot on your ride list.
