100,000 years ago, a small group of people sat around a fire. But what were they wearing? Forget the cartoon picture of ancient humans in leopard print carrying a club. The real story is much more interesting.
Not a single piece of clothing from that time has survived. Leather, fur and plant fibres all rot away. So how do scientists know when humans started getting dressed? In this video we follow the clues: lice that only live in clothing, ancient bone tools still shaped like the ones leather workers use today, and archaeological finds along South Africa’s Cape coast.
You’ll learn:
• Why early humans needed clothes (cold nights, rain, and moving into colder lands)
• How hides were scraped, softened and worn as wraps and capes
• How much of the body was really covered
• How people decorated themselves with red ochre and shell beads
Next time you get dressed, spare a thought for the first person who scraped a fox skin by the fire. 🔥
