Is Bonifacio Global City (BGC) the epitome of modern urban living, or is it a beautiful business district that lacks a soul?
In this episode of Aesthetic Archive, we explore the controversial question: Is BGC the soulless business district of Metro Manila?
With its sleek skyscrapers, immaculate landscaping, clean sidewalks, and carefully planned public spaces, BGC stands out as one of the Philippines' most modern business districts. But beneath its polished exterior lies a question worth exploring: has the pursuit of the perfect urban environment come at the expense of history, local character, and the spontaneity that makes cities feel alive?
Inspired by criticisms of Singapore's highly planned urban landscape, we examine whether BGC suffers from a similar dilemma. We look at its corporate atmosphere, association with wealth and exclusivity, strict management of public spaces, reliance on global brands, and relative lack of the historical layers found in older districts like Makati, Binondo, and downtown Manila.
We also explore the BGC Bubble, the idea that its clean, orderly environment can feel disconnected from the everyday realities of Metro Manila.
But is BGC really soulless? Or are we simply witnessing a different approach to urban development, one that prioritizes order, efficiency, and modernity over the organic character of older neighborhoods?
This video isn't about bashing BGC or romanticizing the problems of older Philippine cities. After all, a broken sidewalk isn't automatically charming, and urban chaos isn't necessarily a sign of character.
Instead, we're asking a bigger question: Can we build cities that are beautiful and well-planned without sacrificing their identity, cultural richness, and human spirit?
Join Aesthetic Archive as we look beyond the glass towers and picture-perfect streets to explore what makes a city truly beautiful, and what makes it feel alive.
