I recently received the new 4K Blu-ray and started digging into the film again after not seeing it for years. The transfer is beautiful, but more importantly, it reminded me just how much I love this movie. Frazetta’s designs, Bakshi’s animation, and the sheer gravitas of that world still feel powerful, dangerous, and completely wicked. Discovering Fire and Ice on VHS in the 1990s genuinely expanded my imagination. It showed me that fantasy could look and move differently—that animation could feel muscular, strange, painterly, and mythic. It blew my mind then, and revisiting it now brought all of that inspiration rushing back. One of the disc’s features includes Robert Rodriguez—one of my favorite filmmakers and greatest creative inspirations—discussing the idea of bringing Frazetta’s paintings to life. That planted the seed: what would it feel like to take one of the film’s greatest characters, Darkwolf, and attempt a small animated tribute built around that same idea? So, I gave it a shot. If you’ve never seen Fire and Ice, seek it out. It remains a singular piece of fantasy animation and a testament to the imaginations of Frank Frazetta, Ralph Bakshi, and the artists who helped create it.
