CNA Saves a 9 Day Old Infant - Kyle Upton - CNA Heroes on CNA-TV

Kyle Upton is a CNA with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. As a nursing assistant at the hospital, Kyle is often asked to check the leads and wires on patients monitoring devices, as sometimes they pop off. To many, this can become a mundane and routine task. But not to Kyle. He was asked to evaluate a patient’s monitor for mechanical problem. However, he quickly realized that it was not a mechanical malfunction, rather a serious medical condition causing inadequate cardiac output in a 9 day old newborn. By recognizing this and quickly notifying the medical team, the medical team was able to rapidly make the diagnosis and medically stabilize the infant by medically re-opening the cardiac duct. His rapid reaction that the problem was medical and not mechanical saved this patient’s life. Thank-you Kyle Upton for your rapid evaluation and response!
