Parent and carer involvement in an early years setting is more than exchanging occasional updates. It means building a genuine partnership in which families and practitioners share information, communicate openly and work towards common goals. This lesson explains how that partnership can support children’s development by creating consistency between home and the setting, helping children feel secure, valued and confident to explore. You will also learn how parents and carers contribute to a holistic understanding of each child, including their interests, strengths, challenges and responses to change. The lesson considers how shared strategies and mutual respect can strengthen care and education, while active involvement can increase parental confidence, satisfaction and advocacy. Finally, it explores how adults can model the value of learning, helping to encourage curiosity, resilience and a positive attitude towards education. The key message is that effective partnership is something practitioners do with families, keeping the child at the centre.
