Под лежачий камень вода не течёт.
"Water doesn't flow under a stone that lies still."
A Russian proverb. Nothing changes if you don't act.
---
Everything in this film is torn paper. No stock textures, no photographs, no footage — every frame is generated, and every torn edge is re-torn twice a second, so the whole picture moves the way stop-motion moves.
There are three constants, and the film never explains them:
The stone never moves — until it does, once, near the end.
The river always moves.
The camera begins by observing, and slowly becomes mobile.
Stone is resistance. River is time. Movement is life.
The paper is part of it too. It begins rigidly layered and perfectly separated, and by the end it is torn, folded, soaked and displaced. The animation goes through the same change the character does: it starts as a collage and ends as something alive.

LYRICS
I found a place where shadows sleep,
Beneath a sky that never speaks,
The dust had learned the shape of feet
That came no more.
A silver thread beneath the earth
Kept whispering what silence's worth,
While something heavy held the world
Against the floor.
I watched the seasons change their names,
Saw winter wear the face of spring,
And somewhere underneath it all
I heard a distant singing.
I thought the river had forgotten me.
I thought the river had forgotten me.
But water remembers
What stone refuses to know.
It finds every fracture,
Every place it can go.
And I have been sleeping
With my hands underground,
Waiting for something to happen
While the world moved around.
There was a door without a wall,
A bell that rang without a call,
A road that disappeared
Whenever I looked down.
I carried maps beneath my skin,
Marked every place I'd never been,
Then blamed the stars
For drawing circles on the ground.
The river never changed its course.
It only changed the land.
And somewhere in the distance
Something began to break.
Not the world.
The weight.
Water remembers
What stone refuses to know.
It doesn't need permission
From the places it erodes.
And I have been waiting
For the current to turn,
As though rivers owe their direction
To the bridges they burn.
Perhaps the mountain
Was never in front of me.
Perhaps the valley
Was something I carried.
Perhaps the prison
Had no walls at all.
Perhaps the door
Was only waiting
For me to stop calling it a wall.
Water remembers
Even what stone forgets.
Every scar is a doorway
If you lean into it.
And somewhere beneath me
I can feel the ground move.
Or maybe—
For the first time—
I am.
The river kept going.
It never looked back.
I wonder
how long it had been
waiting for me
to disappear.
