• How Is Iran Reshaping the “Axis of Resistance”? Could Its Regional Network Become a Liability That Threatens Iran Itself? •
How are wars reshaping Iran’s “Axis of Resistance,” and what does the declining capabilities of Tehran’s allies mean for the future of conflict in the Middle East? After three years of confrontations, the weakening of Hamas and Hezbollah, the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in Syria, and the outbreak of the US-Israeli war against Iran in February 2026, Tehran faces a new strategic reality that is forcing it to reassess the tools of its regional influence.
Having long relied on its allies to deter adversaries and keep war away from Iranian territory, Iran is now increasingly relying on its own missiles, drones, and geographic position, with the Strait of Hormuz, the Red Sea, and the Bab al-Mandab Strait taking on greater strategic importance.
At the same time, Iran has not abandoned its network of allies. Instead, it is reshaping it to adapt to changing circumstances. The Houthis are becoming increasingly important in threatening maritime shipping routes, while Tehran is moving toward greater reliance on smaller, more flexible armed cells in Iraq. Hezbollah, meanwhile, is reorganizing its military tactics amid mounting pressure and losses.
The most significant shift, however, lies in the strategic dilemma facing Iran: the more its allies’ ability to protect it diminishes, the greater the likelihood that Tehran will intervene directly to defend them, particularly when it views their survival as integral to its national security.
Will the “Axis of Resistance” evolve from a deterrence network designed to protect Iran into a liability that could draw it into wider confrontations? How might this shift reshape the regional balance of power, heighten the risk of escalation, and prompt the Gulf states, Israel, and the United States to strengthen their security cooperation?
