Biodegradable and compostable are not the same word — and the man who put PLA into packaging explains exactly where the difference lives. Part 1 of 2. 🎧 Full episode on Spotify & Apple: https://linktr.ee/goodgarbagepodcast In this episode with Dr. Ramani Narayan: • Biodegradability is a property, not a label — every real standard asks whether 90%+ of the polymer carbon is converted by microbes to CO2, within a time frame set by the disposal environment (180 days or less for composting). • Oxo-"biodegradable" additives break plastic into small particles, not into food for microbes. If they truly cut a carbon-carbon backbone at ambient temperature, recyclers would already be using them instead of 200°C and a catalyst. • Bio-based is not biodegradable: sugarcane-derived polyethylene is 100% renewable carbon and still will not break down. End of life is decided by the backbone — carbon-carbon versus ester — not by where the carbon came from.
