Considering the status of English as a world language today, its beginnings in Germany were very modest. My presentation will chart the rise of English language learning and teaching from the late Middle Ages to the 20th century. This includes the goals of individuals or institutions, the teaching materials, as well as the teachers and their education. Examples will show that language materials reflect pedagogical, cultural and political contexts as well as the shifts in what is considered language competence.
