The morning light is cold and grey, It feels the same as yesterday. The rain falls down outside the glass, I watch the hours slowly pass. I sit within this worn-out chair, With no one left for whom to care. The wallpaper is peeling thin, Reflecting all the worn within. I sit alone and watch the rain, And try to hide this quiet pain. The shadows fall, the hours creep, While all my ancient memories sleep. My green old sweater keeps me warm, A shield against the silent storm. But deep inside my chest I feel, A hollow ache that is too real. The desk is empty, neat and still, Upon the dusty windowsill. The lamp is off, the cup is dry, Beneath this cloudy, weeping sky. I look upon her smiling face, Preserved within this little space. The gold frame holds her picture tight, A single spark of vanished light. She left this world so long ago, The reasons why I do not know. Her eyes are fixed on something near, But I am trapped in silence here. I sit alone and watch the rain, And try to hide this quiet pain. The shadows fall, the hours creep, While all my ancient memories sleep. The street below is full of ghosts, And memories I miss the most. I see the people walking fast, While I am anchored in the past. The umbrella shapes are just a blur, A lonely, melancholy stir. I wonder where they all might go, With places that I used to know. My hands are old and marked with time, A silent and unconscious mime. I clasp them tight within my lap, As if to bridge the lonely gap. The silence grows within these walls, No children laugh, no neighbor calls. I am alone in this grey room, Enveloped in a quiet gloom. I sit alone and watch the rain, And try to hide this quiet pain. The shadows fall, the hours creep, While all my ancient memories sleep. I remember how the sun could shine, When her sweet hand was held in mine. The world was bright and full of sound, With joy and laughter all around. But now the years have gone away, And only shadows seem to stay. I sit and watch the hours pass, Behind this cold and tearful glass. I do not wish to ask for more, Than simply standing at my door. To hear a voice, to see a friend, Before my quiet life must end. But everyone has moved along, And I am left to hum this song. The rain continues its slow fall, And I am answering its call. I sit alone and watch the rain, And try to hide this quiet pain. The shadows fall, the hours creep, While all my ancient memories sleep. I am the man within the frame, Without a voice to speak my name. I am the silence in the air, For no one knows that I am there. The green light of the afternoon, Is fading into evening soon. I'll sit and wait for night to come, And count the things that I have done.
