The Utah Territorial Insane Asylum in Provo had opened in 1885, replacing an earlier institution in Salt Lake City where conditions had been described as primitive and punitive. ([Utah State Hospital][1]) But the story of Mourning Hill Asylum is far darker. According to the legend, the institution became infamous for unexplained deaths, disturbing treatment of patients, and strange events that supposedly continued long after the building was abandoned. 🕯️🌑 The historical record does reveal a troubling side of early Utah psychiatric care. Researchers have documented that some patients at the earlier Salt Lake asylum were reportedly kept outdoors in cages, while Utah's Territorial Insane Asylum maintained detailed patient and financial records during the 1890s. The documented institution was the Utah Territorial Insane Asylum in Provo, which was renamed the Utah State Insane Asylum in 1896.
