In an 11+ paper the words all start with the same letters, so a quick glance isn't enough. In about six minutes, learn the Letter Ladder: compare the first letter, climb when they match, keep climbing until the tie breaks, then number the list from the top. This animated lesson is for pupils preparing for the verbal reasoning paper in the 11+ Transfer Test. Mat and Inspector Fox put CHARIOT, CHARITY, CHARCOAL, CHARM and CHART in order, check the list by reading down it, and show the two traps that catch most people: stopping too early, and counting from the bottom. Then it's your turn with two questions, the second asking for the last word, followed by a full explanation of both answers. This is part 1 of 2 on alphabetical order. Part 2 orders backwards spellings and finds the letter nearest the start or end of the alphabet. 00:00 Intro 00:31 What the question means 00:54 The method: the Letter Ladder 01:18 Worked example 02:12 Proof: read down the list 02:39 Common traps 03:17 Your turn: two questions 03:49 Question 1 explained 04:33 Question 2 explained 05:15 Recap Grab a pencil and some paper before you start: there are two questions to try with the video paused.
