Nearly half of Tennessee's tornadoes strike after dark, the highest share of any state in the country. In this video, we count down 12 reasons why nighttime tornadoes are so dangerous here, from the low-level jet stream overhead to the sirens that were never built to wake you up. We also look at the real events behind the numbers, including the March 2020 Nashville and Cookeville tornadoes and the 2008 Super Tuesday outbreak, and what research says about why tornadoes between midnight and sunrise are more than twice as likely to kill. The video ends with a simple night-time safety plan you can set up in about 15 minutes. In this video: Why Tennessee leads the nation in nighttime tornadoes How the low-level jet keeps storms going after sunset Tennessee's second tornado season in fall and winter Why sirens, spotters, and sleep work against you at night The Super Tuesday 2008 outbreak and Union University Why mobile homes and homes without basements raise the risk What research says about nighttime tornado deaths Your step-by-step plan: phone alerts, NOAA Weather Radio, shelter spot, shoes and helmet My challenge: do one thing this week. Turn on your phone alerts, get a weather radio, or pick your safe room. Then tell me which one you did in the comments.
