In 1984, one of Hollywood's most respected directors named Annette Haven as his first choice for a major studio thriller. She wasn't a studio actress. She was something the mainstream had quietly decided never to acknowledge — a Golden Age cinema icon who built one of the most disciplined, principle-driven careers in the history of 1970s alternative film.
Born Annette Robinson on December 1, 1954, in Las Vegas, Nevada, and raised in a conservative Mormon household, Annette Haven defied expectations. After moving to San Francisco, she entered the film industry in 1973 and spent the next fifteen years building a remarkable career. She earned Best Actress honors for China Girl (1975), won Best Supporting Actress for A Coming of Angels (1977), starred in Barbara Broadcast, and later founded Crystal Dragon Productions, where she wrote, directed, and produced her own projects while staying true to her personal principles.
In 1984, director Brian De Palma praised Haven’s acting ability and screen-tested her for the lead role in Body Double. Although the part ultimately went to Melanie Griffith, De Palma hired Haven as a production consultant and acting coach for the film. The woman who missed the role ended up helping shape the performance of the actress who won it a testament to the respect she earned from serious Hollywood professionals.
She retired in the late 1980s as home video transformed the industry she helped define. Settling in Mill Valley, California, she chose a private life and left behind 86 credited productions, along with induction into the AVN and XRCO Halls of Fame. This documentary follows her journey from Las Vegas to San Francisco, from industry acclaim to a brief brush with Hollywood, and finally to a self-imposed disappearance. Looking back, her story is not a cautionary tale it is the story of someone who won.
