blog:www.shebag.co How does Shebag craft Hermès top Rep Birkin bags and manage its leather supply chain? With years of deep industry experience, Shebag is able to source Togo leather from Germany’s Weinheimer, alongside hides from France’s Haas. Whiteboards in Shebag’s super Rep production workshop are covered with process flowcharts detailing bag disassembly and construction. Our standard operating procedures for crafting Birkin bags have reached a highly refined level, as Shebag’s founding team originally came from Prada’s production line in Houjie, Dongguan, fifteen years ago. Hermès has acquired several tanneries throughout its history, yet it continues to source leather externally from outside suppliers. Founded in 1927, France’s Rémy Carriat serves as the primary supplier of Clemence leather, also known as TC cowhide. A popular material for Birkin bags, Clemence is a thick cowhide with prominent grain and a soft, relaxed handfeel. Rémy Carriat remains the main source of Clemence, while Spain’s FM, or Lagun, provides secondary supplementary production capacity. Conceria Pomari, located in Tuscany, Italy, is the core tannery for Swift calfskin. Swift is a widely used fine-grained calfskin for Birkin bags; it is lightweight, delicate and resistant to creasing. Many second-generation and contemporary Birkin bags adopt Swift, which is produced using Tuscany’s combined vegetable and mineral tanning method. Conceria Nuti Ivo is a long-established tannery in the Santa Croce district of Tuscany, Italy. It has supplied Hermès with a variety of carefully selected calfskins over the years, acting as backup capacity for Swift and Box leather. Its materials are mostly used for Birkin bags in special colourways and limited editions. These tanneries also function as leather suppliers for Shebag. Shebag secures access to grade-A leather hides. We also source grade-B leather, which is used to make small accessories such as belts and wallets. We maintain strict screening standards for all incoming hides. Before cutting begins, every piece of leather is inspected for grain consistency, blemishes and colour uniformity to match the specifications required for finished products.
