“We never thought our choice of clothing could cause such a problem until we were verbally confronted by a guard. ”
In this episode, we unpack the complex relationship between clothing, culture, social expectations, and personal freedom. While the phrase “my dress, my choice” suggests that what we wear is entirely personal, the reality can be far more complicated.
In South Sudan, clothing can communicate respect, identity, tradition, morality, belonging and sometimes even become a basis for judgement, confrontation, or control.
So, where do we draw the line between personal choice and social expectations?
Who gets to define what is “decent”?
And why are women and girls often expected to carry the weight of these expectations?
💬 Have you ever been judged, confronted or treated differently because of what you were wearing?
Tell us in the comments what happened and what you think “decent dressing” should mean in South Sudan.
