Washington, D.C. is always changing — and its architecture is a window into the city's rich history. In this episode of WETA Arts, host Felicia Curry meets Rebecca Miller, Executive Director of the D.C. Preservation League, for a tour of the buildings, neighborhoods and city plans that shaped the nation's capital — and the fight to keep them standing.
The conversation begins outside the Old Post Office Pavilion, the 1891 Richardsonian Romanesque landmark that nearly fell to the wrecking ball in the 1970s and gave the organization its original name: Don't Tear It Down. From there, Miller and Curry travel to Shaw, St. Elizabeths in Southeast, and the rooftop of the Military Women's Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery to talk about historic districts, adaptive reuse, the L'Enfant and McMillan plans, and the proposed triumphal arch at Memorial Circle.
