Arrullo - Victoriano Valencia - IWCB

IWCB Wind Symphony plays Arrullo (I. Mocari, II. Goyo, III. Mayo) by Victoriano Valencia https://iwcb.org.au Arrullo (2003) is a three-movement suite for band. While "arrullo" translates as "lullaby", in the Colombian context it also refers to the history of enslaved African women who cared for children including through song and telling stories full of rhythm and dance. The first movement, I. Mocari, combines pre-Colombian indigenous musical influences with the sound of the modern wind band. In the second moment, II. Goyo ("father"), the true arrullo first emerges: a father (represented by the French horn and the oboe) sings the lullaby gently to his baby, "Go to sleep/Go to sleep now/Sleep/the possum is coming". As it ends, the father whispers "good night". The final movement, III. Mayo ("mother"), continues the lullaby but with a strong and jubilant dance-like pulse, inspired by the call and response traditions heard at community festivals. Victoriano Valencia Rincón (b. 1970) is one of Colombia's leading composers for wind band and traditional folk ensembles. He is a strong advocate for continued traditions in wind band music. He is also the director of Bands Magazine, a quarterly publication focused on the Colombian wind band movement. Our Conductor - Joshua McNulty: Graduating from the Sydney Conservatorium in 2015, Joshua is a conductor, composer and educator. Primarily a reed player, he has recently started to dive into brass instruments in addition to his conducting and education work. His studies with Dr John Lynch and Dr Anthony Clarke helped him build a solid foundation in conducting which have grown significantly while working with The FilmHarmonia Orchestra (founder and MD) the Inner West Community Band (MD), the Macquarie University Symphony Orchestra, the Canaria Scoring Orchestra, the Wellington Players, and the Strathfield Symphony Orchestra. As an educator, Joshua directs numerous school bands across Sydney as well as tutoring many students on their instruments. Joshua has always had a keen interest in music written with a narrative, especially as a composer and is very grateful to have had works premiered by both FilmHarmonia and IWCB. Joshua is especially proud to be given the opportunity to contribute to the growth of the Australian wind band community through his appointment as MD of the Inner West Community Band.
