Moving abroad can change more than where you live. It can change your friendships, your identity, and the way you relate to the people you once felt closest to. One of the most painful parts of living abroad is realizing that some of the friendships you left behind no longer feel the same. You may return home and notice a distance between you and your old friends. You still love and care about them, but you’ve grown in different directions. In this video, I talk about the experience of losing friendships after moving abroad, outgrowing old friendships, and the grief that can come with realizing that some relationships belonged to an earlier chapter of your life. I also share something I learned through my own journey of moving between cities and countries: sometimes what we miss isn’t only the person. We miss the feeling that friendship gave us—the feeling of safety, love, connection, belonging, and being understood. Learning to create more of that sense of safety within ourselves can change the way we experience relationships, goodbyes, and life abroad. If you’re an expat, immigrant, digital nomad, or someone living abroad who has experienced loneliness, changing friendships, or the feeling of no longer belonging to your old life, this video is for you. I’m Tracey, a somatic coach and IFS practitioner helping people navigate the emotional side of relocation and major life transitions.
