Michael Carrick's men took the lead twice in the second half, but failed to hold on as the hosts grabbed a point in dramatic circumstances at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. The game kicked off in the wake of David Moyes and Everton enduring a forgettable transfer deadline day. Folarin Balogun rejected a transfer to Merseyside, while they sold both Iliman Ndiaye and Beto. Thierno Barry, the only recognised centre-forward in the first team, started the game. Bruno Fernandes hit the cross-bar early on after Marcus Rashford and Luke Shaw combined well on the left flank. Rashford, in particular, looked menacing and direct in the wide areas, putting Merlin Rohl under serious pressure. Matheus Cunha blasted a shot over the bar after an excellent run from Rashford in the first half. Bryan Mbeumo gave the visitors the lead shortly after the interval, but Everton struck back through Tyrique George in the 83rd minute. It seemed like Benjamin Sesko did a repeat of last season by scoring the winner off the bench, but deadline day signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles pulled a rabbit out of the hat with his superb striker from distance to secure a point for Everton.
