The Horizontal Standpipe is a tactical hose deployment designed to extend the reach and flexibility of engine company operations in large or complex structures. At Fountain Fire Department, firefighters deploy a 2½-inch supply line from the apparatus to a strategic entry point, where a gated wye is used to supply up to two 1¾-inch attack lines. This configuration creates a reliable water distribution point that allows multiple crews to operate from a single supply line.
This deployment is ideal for large commercial occupancies, strip malls, apartment complexes, and other expansive buildings where the fire area is beyond the effective reach of a standard handline. By establishing a horizontal standpipe, crews can gain an additional 200+ feet of operational reach, improve maneuverability within the structure, and support coordinated fire attack operations without repositioning the engine. This tactic enhances operational efficiency while maintaining a dependable water supply for multiple attack teams.
