I purchased an A0-size pen plotter to see if I could speed up my on-canvas dot matrix painting process and push the work closer to perfection.
In this video, I walk through a few steps of the process: preparing and stretching the canvas, priming it with white household paint, assembling the A0 pen plotter, and plotting a portrait directly onto the canvas.
The plotter itself is incredibly fun and has so much potential to explore. But after I started working with it, I quickly realized that it’s not as simple as it looks. There are so many things that are difficult to control, and getting the exact result you expect can be surprisingly challenging.
It’s easy when you’re creating something simple and ordinary. But once you start pushing beyond that and working on medium- or large-sized paintings and drawings, things become much harder to manage—and getting the result you want can be a real challenge.
I came to the conclusion that you may never be able to make a perfectly controlled artwork with a plotter. I think the irony of the plotter is that, despite its precision, it’s just another tool that can become part of the imperfection.
I’m sharing some of the things I was able to capture during the process. I hope you find it interesting and enjoy seeing what an A0 pen plotter can do.
