Planning a trip to Japan? This practical guide for Indian visitors covers the local customs, travel tips, and must-see places that can help make your visit smoother and more respectful. Japan welcomed about 315,100 visitors from India in 2025, up around 35% from 2024. Whether it’s your first visit or a return trip, a little preparation goes a long way. In this video, you’ll learn: How to behave on Japanese trains: keep your voice low, avoid phone calls, queue patiently, and keep your backpack and luggage out of other passengers’ way. What to keep in mind at shrines and temples: follow marked paths, respect photography restrictions, and ask before photographing people. How to visit busy areas such as Fushimi Inari Taisha and Gion respectfully: stay on public routes, keep walkways clear, and don’t follow or photograph residents without permission. Market and dining etiquette: follow stall guidance, avoid blocking busy lanes, use chopstick rests if provided, and remember that slurping noodles is generally acceptable. Paying in Japan: tipping isn’t customary. Cards are accepted in many places, but carrying some Japanese yen is useful for small shops and cash-only locations. What to know before riding local buses: check the boarding and payment system, queue in turn, and keep bags clear of the aisle. Onsen basics: wash before entering the bath, keep your towel out of the water, and check the facility’s rules in advance. When to visit: spring is popular for cherry blossoms and autumn for colourful foliage. Both can be busy, so consider starting sightseeing early and booking accommodation and transport ahead. Places featured: Tokyo and Shibuya Crossing; Kyoto’s Fushimi Inari Taisha, Kiyomizu-dera, Gion, Nishiki Market, and Arashiyama; Osaka; Hakone; and the Mount Fuji area around Lake Kawaguchiko. Travel with curiosity, follow local signs and staff guidance, and be considerate of residents and other visitors. Customs and facility rules can vary, so check current information before you go.
